I do not know how to post an answer, only a comment. Can you tell me how?
First of all, only accredited investors are permited to invest in
private equity funds (check the definition of accredited investor for
specific income and net worth minimums).
There is not much data on private equity funds that is reliable or
consistent becuase this industry in not regulated in the same manner
as the stock market or even the lightly regulated mutual fund
industry. However, if you are a high net worth investor, I can
provide you with a list of some funds that have had excellent
performance.
If you are not an accredited investor, your best bet is to invest in
early stage companies as an angel investor. However, this is
extremely risky and I would not recommend it unless you have a
superior understanding of both the private and public markets, as well
as extensive experience. A fund is the best way to go due to the
enormous risk of business failure, but even PE funds are riddled with
risk.
There are many mutual funds that take small exposure in PE-based
investments (although I am not a fan at all of mutual funds as an
investment vehicle for a variety of reasons).
As someone in the venture capital industry, I would recommend you read
the book, The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs (M. Stathis) for
an in depth yet well-explained look at PE and venture capital. It has
a thoroug chapter explaining VC and PE. Highly recommended. Good
luck. |
