French Intelligence-Gathering in the Syrian Mandate, 1920-40, by M. Thomas
Abstract:
This article considers the role of military intelligence and security
service personnel in sustaining French control in the Syrian mandate.
Drawing on recently repatriated French secret service archives, it
contends that the imperial policing and covert operations conducted by
the staffs of the Service de Renseignements, the Sûreté Générale and
the Contrôle bédouin were more integral to French mandatory control,
and its breakdown, than has hitherto been acknowledged. In their
approach to Syria's ethnic communities, the French security services
shaped official threat perceptions and thus defined the High
Commission's treatment of indigenous political opposition.
