I just saw a PBS show that discussed a stress study which demonstrated that people with a stressful job (in this case caretaking Alzheimer's patients) heal from wounds slower (in this case 9 days slower) than those with less stressful jobs. Normally, jobs are listed by how much money the average worker makes. I would like a list of careers/jobs listed by stress. One example of a good answer would include a list of stressful and list of non stressful jobs. How would teaching high school in an inner city fit into these lists? |

Hi! Thanks for the question. Since this is a subjective question, it would be good to cite different surveys as regards the topic. The following links provide such lists and even though there are some varieties, professions like police, teachers and customer service reps are almost always included in the most stressful list. ?Have a Stressful Job? You Must Have an Ulcer...Right?? (Includes list of less stressful jobs) http://www.cdc.gov/ulcer/myth.htm ?Teaching and social work are the most stressful jobs? http://www.management-issues.com/display_page.asp?section=blog&id=1820 ?Stress Much?? http://blog.fastcompany.com/archives/2004/01/09/stress_much.html ?THE STRESS OF BEING PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES? http://www.jobstresshelp.com/archive.htm ?Paramedics top list of most stressed workers? http://www.paramedic.org.uk/news_archive/2004/06/News_Item.2004-06-09.2327/view Search terms used: most less stressful jobs professions I hope these links would help you in your research. Hi It should also be noted it is not just stress that is important, but also the type of stress and the individual's reaction to, and management of, it. See the concepts of stress, distress and eustress http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_%28medicine%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Selye I recall once seeing that musical conductors are supposed to be one of the longest lived professions and it was posited that this was due to it being a productive job with excellent levels of eustress. (And few health and safety issues, at least since Lully) |

Here in the UK, dentists and vets have been mooted as having two of the most stressful jobs. I wouldn't want to do either. The thought of being savaged by an angry animal (human or otherwise) puts me right off. |
