About 1/3 of the time when I load windows 98 the mouse gets stuck
leaving me no choice but to shut off the power and restart with the
message that the computer was not turned off properly. This is not
only annoying but might be a forerunner of more serious trouble. Does
anybody know why this happens or how it can be avoided?

vaac...

It sounds like you might have way too little RAM installed,
and this may be coupled with poor maintenance habits, such
as defragmenting too infrequently. If you have adequate RAM,
I'd begin to suspect a failing hard drive.

Do you know where to go on your system to see how much RAM you have?
Do you defragment your drive regularly? How old is your hard drive?
Telling me how big it is will serve to answer that, to some extent.
Did you feel comfortable enough to open your computer case and try
some of the suggestions made in the comment by hardtofindbooks-ga?

Hi vaac

First thing I would do is try another mouse if you have one.
Otherwise if you are happy playing with hardware crack open the case
and check that everything is properly connected and seated. CPU, fan,
memory and cards. Check the fan is clean and working.
Then if the problem persists you might remove any superfluous cards
and see if that fixes the problem. Put them back in one at a time and
check the situation.
Same with the memory, if in 2 pieces try both on their own and see if
the problem goes away.
If the problem persists and you have recently installed any software,
you might try uninstalling it.

Your Ram is not compatiable with your motherboard.because windows 98
is not that much sufficient. when ever it face problems like that it
stuck the computer, try to change the brand of Ram . If this could not
solve your problem then there will is one other problem is your sound
card or graphic card is not installed properly. uninstill them and
reinstall them again, dont forget to restart your computer.
