Since two well-known dictionaries give variations of the definition of jimmies, I am posting this as a comment: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary jimmies Pronunciation: 'ji-mEz Function: noun plural Etymology: origin unknown : tiny rod-shaped bits of usually chocolate-flavored candy often sprinkled on ice cream http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/jimmies ===================== The American Heritage Dictionary jimmies SYLLABICATION: jim·mies PLURAL NOUN: Small particles of chocolate or flavored candy sprinkled on ice cream as a topping. ETYMOLOGY: Origin unknown. http://www.bartleby.com/61/30/J0043000.html These sites may interest you: http://www.boston-online.com/glossary/jimmies.html http://www.lanceandeskimo.com/journal/jimmies.shtml http://www.barrypopik.com/article/521/sprinkles-for-jimmies Please let me know if the above information suffices as an answer to your question. GourmetSleuth.com provides a brief but in-depth summary of Jimmies: http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/equivalents_substitutions.asp?index=J&tid=2204 According to "The Sleuth" a fellow named Jimmie Bartholomew ran a machine that made chocolate grains for Just Born Candy Company. The CEO gave him the honor of having the tasty morsels named for him. Calling sprinkles "jimmies" sounds as wrong as calling soda "pop". |
