Hi! Thanks for a very interesting question.

There is no agreement on the specific number of years as regards to
the lifespan of chickens. It seems that based on the articles I was
able to find, the lifespan of chickens is 5 to 10 years but can go as
long as 12-15 years.

"Chickens and ducks can live anywhere from 5 - 10 years depending on
the quality of life provided."
http://www.petinfo4u.com/chickens.htm

"7 years"
http://www.angelfire.com/oh/ZebraDirectory/faq.html#lifespan

"The average lifespan of a factory farmed chicken is 7 weeks .The
natural lifespan of a chicken is 7 years."
http://library.thinkquest.org/J0111448/Didyouknow.html

"7- or 8-year normal lifespan for a chicken."
http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2004-06-18-old-chicken_x.htm

"The natural lifespan of a chicken is about ten years."
http://www.g21.net/news45.html

"The average lifespan of a chicken is eight to 10 years..."
http://www.portlandtribune.com/archview.cgi?id=33795

"The 'natural' lifespan of a chicken could be over 12 years."

"Pet chickens average lifespan is about 15 years."

You will get a range of estimates - from 4 to 15 (or even 35) years.

From the Glasgow zoo:
"3. The 'natural' lifespan of a chicken could be over 12 years.
However, even in the wild they are predated upon by everything. An
'oldish' chicken looks like that and is likely to be selectively
picked out by a predator, plus its reactions will be slowing down. One
of our hens here, 'Rambo', is over eight years already and still
laying."
http://www.glasgowzoo.co.uk/articles/birds/poultry.php

"Broiler chickens are slaughtered after just six or seven weeks (a
chicken's natural lifespan is around seven years)."
http://www.vegsoc.org/info/broiler.html

The site below talks about a specific chicken regarded somewhat as a pet.
"According to The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow, the maximum
lifespan of a chicken is 30-35 years. If that is true, we'll take it!"
http://www.upc-online.org/summer04/feathers.htm

"While chickens produce eggs, most owners grow to consider them as
pets. The average lifespan of a chicken is eight to 10 years, so when
considering adding hens to your family, plan your commitment
accordingly."
http://www.portlandtribune.com/archview.cgi?id=33795

"Chickens and ducks can live anywhere from 5 - 10 years depending on
the quality of life provided. Most hens stop laying eggs around 3
years of age."

guys live one year in horible conditions"

Oops! I just tried to post this and it was locked while I was
composing this. Anyway, you'll have something for comparison when the
question is open again. (I knew better than to even start answering,
but I was just interested - probably an aftereffect of a show I once
saw on TV entitled something like "The Natural History of the
Chicken." It was a riot.)

Just to clarify the nature of "The Natural History of the Chicken": it
is not a real documentary. (You can see reviews on amazon.com. One of
the reviewers of that video recommends "The Chicken Book" for more
serious information - this book is also still available.)
