I am re-opening the following question ID: 701894, with first right of
refusal to Rainbow-ga. I am currently going through the link that you
provided http://www.dlib.org/dlib/may99/05paskin.html and will update
if this is the answer. Sorry for the delay - it has been a really hectic
time for me.

Hello!

I came across a research paper about two-three years ago that talked
about the limitations of the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) system.
Unable to locate it now.

It briefly talks about how the DOI is basically a 'page redirect' etc.
Would appreciate if you could locate this and/or related papers
talking about the limitation and shortcomings of the DOI system.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Rainbow-ga:

Thanks for your efforts to answer my question. Unfortunately, the
above paper is not the one I was looking for. I did a good amount of
research myself and came up with the paper. Here it is: Electronic
Rights Management and Digital Identifier Systems by DANIEL J. GERVAIS
in the Journal of Electronic Publishing.

See the text from:

"Digital Object Identifier: The DOI is not an identifier per se, but
it offers both a structure for an identifier and a persistent routing
system to a database containing relevant information."

and the subsequent paragraphs.

I guess I will be closing my questions now.

Is there any way to give a tip to recognize your efforts, even if I
close the question. Do let me know. Thanks again for your efforts.

Hi Pat79,

I'm glad you found the paper you were searching for.

I want to thank you for your generous offer and your ethics. However,
since the papers I provided were not the ones you were looking for,
there is no need to tip me. Again, thank you for the thought.

It was a pleasure working with you.

Best regards,
Rainbow
