"Summary: Roofing membranes and synthetic rubber roofing compounds for
flat roofs outperform gravel roofing materials and make roof leak
detection far easier. These roofing materials are basically seamless

Membrane roof is one of the options. Build-up and metal roofs are also
available. Within each category, there are different material choices
as well. For example, there are EPDM and PVC membrane roofs, aluminum,
copper, steel metal roofs. Each of them has different pros and cons.
Here is a web site that briefly explains the differences between them
and items to be aware of in a roofing project and roofing contractor

http://www.roofhelper.com/rubber_pvc.htm

The National Roofing Contractors Association is also a resource of
contractor referral and consumer education of roofing.

http://www.nrca.net/consumer/default.aspx

When choosing a contractor, sometimes they are associated with a
certain product or only work with certain product and push for that
and be bias on other products. It is a good idea, like what you are
doing, to research and educate yourself so you can decide on what is
the best choice for your situation.

Architects might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you
are doing a roofing project but they can help you to evaluate your
roof and make objective recommendations since they should be
knowledgeable on the subject and they are not associated with any one
product or product type. Buying a few hours of their time can be
beneficial.
