I had run across a web site devoted to changing the point structures for March Madness pools. Usually there is one point awarded for first round, two for getting the winner of the second round right and doubling up to 32 points for the championship game. However, this site suggested many improvements including awarding more points for bigger upsets. Why should someone get the same amount of points for choosing a #1 seed to defeat a #16 seed as for choosing a #13 seed to defeat a #4 seed? It included a compilation of data that actually showed the likelihood of a certain # seed defeating another # seed. I believe that they called themselves the committee or coalition (or something like that) to reform bracket contests. Sorry, I don't remember it exactly but they were trying to inject mathematic probability into the risk/reward structure of NCAA Men's Basketball tournament pools. | |
