As to your second question: "how much do they lower the heart rate?"
The answer to this is based on many factors like age, weight,
condition of the patient, not to mention dosage. It also differs from
minute to minute, depending, for example, on whether the person is
exercising. There is no one answer.

By the way, increasing physical fitness through exercise is also a way
of lowering heart rate.

Here in the UK, there are things called 'Ace Inhibitors'.

It's possible that Alanna has included these by some other name ... I
haven't checked through all the links.

Actually, ACE INHIBITORS reduce blood pressure more than heart rate.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors work to stop the RAA cycle.
Damaged kidneys can continuously produce renin, increasing blood
pressure. Kidneys can be damaged by HTN. A vicious cycle. ACE
inhibitors block the lungs from turning the angiotensin I into
angiotensin II, which is the potent vasodilator as well as the cause
of the aldosterone production. ACE inhibitors end in ?pril as in
captopril, enalapril, and lininopril.
