An interesting newsletter from the National Commission on
Entrepreneurship at http://www.ncoe.org/newsletter/update/05_03_00.html
shows in part:
"Austins technology boom is a recent phenomenon. As late as the
mid-1980s, the regions economy was dominated by state government and
the University of Texas main campus, UT-Austin. Today, the city is
home to more than 2,000 technology companies, 70 percent of which are
locally headquartered. The market capitalization of the top 25 firms
in Austin exceeded $124 billion in 1999.
This entrepreneurial boom is bringing real bottom line benefits to the
region. The Austin area exhibited 60 percent employment growth between
1989 and 1998 -- second in the U.S. to Las Vegas. Last year, the
Austin economy grew by 5.3 percent and local economists predict a
continued 5 percent growth rate for the next two years. Meanwhile, the
region is attracting lots of newcomers, with more than 2,000 people
moving into the area each month. "
They continue to make specific reference to the following companies:
"At about the same time, several major semiconductor firms, including
AMD, Applied Materials, and Samsung, set up shop in Austin. In
addition, a young student at UT-Austin named Michael Dell created a
company call Dell Computer. Dell since has become the biggest player
on the Austin scene, spawning hundreds of "Dellionnaires" who have
gone on to launch their own firms.
Austin continued to boom throughout the 1990s. Today, the regions
economic base is strong and it continues to attract more new companies
and new talent. Austins diverse high technology base hosts major
companies like IBM, Motorola, and Dell. Yet, it has also spawned a
burgeoning start-up culture in software, internet industries, and
biomedical products. In fact, it is estimated that roughly 175 to 200
new technology firms are started in the Austin region each year."
Whew! I'm afraid I will not be able to list all 1400 companies they
claim are headquartered here, but let's see if we can't find a few
