I expect that the expression is about as old as apple pie. Ever try
to divide one so that two parents and three kids were each satisfied
that they got their fair share? "Splitting the pie", as an expression
from everyday family life, seems a very appropriated simile for
divorce and inheritance problems - where it often appears on the web.
