A funny video showing an old lady setting off an air bag has been making the rounds. It can be found on google video here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8555350258873931759 and another copy here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2889527841583480458 I am looking for some definitive information to prove or disprove this videos authenticity. I.e. is it a spoof created by actors or reality. If there is any information, police report, newspaper article or other coverage on this incident it would be great to know. Also, the timing deployment of the airbag with analysis of the video may assist to determine the authenticity this would be helpful to know. If anyone can locate the individuals involved it would be ideal. I am just looking for this information to settle a bet - no ulterior motive. |

There is no way a properly installed airbag would go off from the old lady's hitting the car with her handbag. Airbags are set to go off only when the force of the accident is great enough to require the additional protection. They don't pop at every little shock. Furthermore, I believe that the airbag's opening was not the result of the full explosion, though it could have been in slow motion. But even if the driver had been anticipating it, he would have been surprised by the bang. Well, I don't have audio, so I suspect that the driver said something to aggrevate the lady. If it was clearly audible, there must have been a microphone somewhere, and the video wasn't the amateur shot it pretends to be. Remember the zoom, the distance to the intersection. |

I haven't seen the video but just wanted to add something that may or may not be helpful. Technically, airbags do not deploy because of impact. Airbags deploy when there is a sudden deceleration of a vehicle (which is, for all intents and purposes, when there is an impact). My point is simply that you can beat the heck out of a car and, because there is no deceleration, the airbag won't go off. Have a good day. |
