Hgalio,
Clinical Research Organizations (CROs) provide independent product
development services, for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and
medical device industries.
I can provide you with:
- The number of clinical investigators monitored worldwide by leading
CROs in phase I-IV clinical trials (2001- 2004).
- The number of clinical trials managed by CROs for the same years
Please let me know in the CLARIFICATION box if these figures would
serve your purpose?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Bobbie7

No the CRO number is only a portion of the total number.
I'm looking for total number of investigators, independent of whether
it is a CRO or Sponsor managed trial
Total Number of CRO Managed Investigators Globally
Total Number of Sponsor (Pharma / Medical) Investigators Globally

Henry,
Thank you for your clarification.
You are correct; the CRO number is only a portion of the total number.
According to M. Mathieu. Parexel's Pharmaceutical R&D Statistical
Sourcebook 2002, "It is now estimated that companies are using CROs on
more than 60% of their clinical projects."
http://www.bionews.net/B/5/I41CD792-001.htm!ArcEntryInfo=0004.73.I41CD792
Therefore a rough estimate could be made:
60% CRO Managed Investigators Globally
40% Sponsor (Pharma / Medical) Investigators Globally
Would the figures I have be useful for you or would you need exact
numbers, not just a rough estimate?
Thanks,
Bobbie7

I'd be ok with an estimate, however, I'm not sure you can extrapolate
an accurate estimate from Parexel's data points. Especially since
there not really the leader in CRO Services. If the Parexel
assumption is the only thing you have, then I'd prefer to just drop
the question

How about this?
From the Association of Clinical Research Organizations:
"CROs are involved in approximately two-thirds of Phase I-III clinical trials."
