I am looking for monthly weather data (eg. Temperature, Precipitation
values) for Pueblo, Colorado or Canon City, Colorado for the years
1878 - 1879.  I am interested in data from the National Weather Service
or its predecessor.  Another possible source is weekly or daily
historical weather information from Canon City Newspapers or the
Colorado Territorial Prision located in Canon City, CO.

I believe that the only reliable source for weather data relating to
that geographical area and the given time frame would be the
meteorological reports of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. From 1870 to
1890, the Signal Corps was responsible for weather observations, as
the Weather Bureau's direct predecessor.

Although the Army did not have a meteorological station in Pueblo or
Canon City, they maintained a such station in nearby Colorado Springs
since 1873.

The weather records of the Signal Corps were transferred to the
Weather Bureau in 1890; they are now kept by the National Archives
(Record Group 0027, Records of the Weather Bureau).

To locate and obtain copies of the records (which is subject to fees),
it is necessary to contact the National Archives:
