As a designer, I've been trying to refine my own processes and
materials. One of the subjects that's comes to my mind alot are icon
design and popular fonts througout the decades of the 20th century. I
personally focus on the 1960's through the end of the millenium, but
I'm not looking for exclusivity there. I'm curious to find any
resources that discuss typographic and iconic trends during each
decade. I'm looking for common themes, styles, colors, and fonts used
during each decade. I'd like to see books as well as websites if
possible. What I'm not looking for is commendiums of examples of
popular icons unqualified. I'm aware many of these exist (in book
form), but most don't have any prudent commentary on why they are
typical of a trend in design. If you want a VERY specific period I'd
say modernist/futurist/minimalist design from 1975 through 1990 as an
area of focus.
What I am looking for:
1. Analysis of trends in design by decade/period in the 20th Century,
focusing on 1960's and after.
2. Trends in typography by decade/period in the 20th Century, focusing
on the 1960's and after.
3. Analysis of trends in icon design/period in the 20th Century,
focusing on the 1960's and after.
Example Material:
For what I think is a very useful example of such design analysis, I
present a site that focuses on current trends in web design:
http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/current-style.cfm
The site analyzes current popular trends by design elements.
Acceptible Anwser:
I'm not looking for any specific number of resources, as I don't know
how much material exists. Just include your findings and any
suggestions you have for further research. I'd like to be able to
derive a list of the most popular fonts of the end of the 20th century
(at least the classics). I'd also like to have a good set of
references for icon design trends.
I can't afford to set the value of this question to very much at this
point, so I just have to hope someone out there is obsessed with this
topic already. I will promise a very generous tip (up to $50) within
the next couple months if the I'm really happy with the results.
Thanks for your time. |
