Hello Google Researchers!
Thank you for your commitment to provide some "humane" help not found elsewhere!
I am a freshmen in a Jesuit college called Saint Peter's College
(www.spc.edu) only reason I chose it was because it is private,
located in my city but the far end of it (very clean, pleasant
enviornment on campus) and it offered a specialized course of Bachelor
of Science in Nursing. However, being a Jesuit college it is REQUIRED!
to take 2 theology courses (6 credits) in order to graduate with a
degree!! I find this very hard to be legal, seperation of State and
Church?? I mean I am not Catholic, and I dont think I should waste my
time studying other religion and eventually fail it and affect my
overall GPA simply because I am not a follower of that religion.. I
live in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Question: Is it legal for the college to force students to take 2
Theology courses that preach catholicism in order to graduate?
P.S: The college is a Liberal Arts college and boasts a Liberal curiculum

I understand you are not Attorneys, but I would like your input on it
with researching NJ laws and overall national law of seperation of
religion from education before talking to an Attorney

Surely you're kidding. As a private school, it can indoctrinate you
all you want. Next time, you'll give a little more thought before
picking a Catholic school. Separation of Church and State is
completely inapplicable to a private school.

I'm puzzled that anyone would think that a Jesuit college requiring a
theology course is somehow violating principles of separation of
church and state. It seems to me that if church-supported schools
could not have such requirements, that would be a violation of
Constitutional principles. If you object so strongly to theology
courses, why did you enroll in a Jesuit institution?

Ditto what the others have said about a private university.

As for the study of other religions being a "waste" of time, I submit
that a study of other religions in addition to one's own can enhance
your belief system tremendously and give you a greater appreciation
for other religions as well. I find it disheartening when people only
find differences among religions without also rejoicing in the
commonality that many religions share. What a shame.

Learning about other religions can really expand our horizons. You may
find things you learn are really interesting, beautiful, and
uplifting, even if they don't "fit" in your own belief system. It is
also okay for things we learn to bother, upset, or even disturb us--we
can certainly learn about ourselves and the world around us from this.
And the introduction of new ideas can expand our minds and/or
strengthen our resolve and already-held beliefs. In my opinion, we
deprive ourselves of learning and growth opportunities when we
surround ourselves only with things that fit in a certain box,
whatever that may be. Something to consider.

Sincerely,
Boquinha-ga

I guess everyone was lined up waiting to pounce on this.
I was too, but you all have said everything. :-)
