Question ID: 71840
Someone recently gave me a PCMCIA ethernet card without any drivers.
The card has no company name on it. All it says is 10/100Mbps PCMCIA
Fast Ethernet Adapter. The dongle says 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet PC
Card Media Cable... if that helps... When I plug the card into the
type I slot it recognized it with plug and pray as "FastEther PC Card"
but can't find drivers for it. I took pictures of this generic
piece of crap and posted them here:
http://aeonphyre.hypermart.net/pcmcia/

For the question to be answered I would like:
The appropriate drivers to use to install this PCMCIA card on a laptop
with Windows XP

Hi,

The card you have is manufactured by Lanbit Computer Inc.

-URL-
http://www.lanbit.com.tw/products/adapter/fEther_PCMCIA.html

This is the URL for the driver. This is an NT driver though. Please
try this if it works. If not, I will try find you another driver.

-URL-
ftp://ftp.lanbit.com.tw/products/PCMCIA_adapter/FEther_PCMCIA/win2000/C32-nt50.zip

You mentioned that "it actually says "PCMCIA FastEther Card" when I
plug it into the PCMCIA slot." This means XP recognizes the card.

After I install the driver at the end of the Windows Add Harware it
tells me that there is an error, the Device does not start... are the
drivers correct/compatible with Win XP. Thanks!

Hi,

I spoke to the Lanbit guys here in India this morning, shortly after
typing out my answer. He said he will mail me an XP driver, but he did
not. It is 9:00 p.m. here, I will be able to get to those guys
tomorrow morning around 10 or 11. This time, I will be sure to get the
drivers for you. If you are in the USA, here is the company contact
details. Allion is Lanbit in the USA.

Allion America, Inc.
43274 Christy Street, Fremont, CA 94538
Tel: +1-510-498-8701
Fax: +1-510-498-8846
Email: usa@allion.com
Web: www.allionamerica.com

I will post a URL soon as i get the driver and upload it, in any case.

Warm regards

Hi,

Here is what you can do. If you have access to a Win98 or Win2000
machine, please try installing the card on this. This URL has drivers.

-URL-
http://www.lanbitnetworks.com/networking/support/PCMCIA-NIC.php

Once installed, please find the version number, chipset, etc.,
whatever info you can get about the card. For this, you may have to go
to the Control Panel > System > Devices > Network Adapters >
Properties (right-click).

If you relay this to me, I may be able to find you the drivers for XP.

Yes, the first URL drivers:
ftp://ftp.lanbit.com.tw/products/PCMCIA_adapter/FEther_PCMCIA/win2000/C32-nt50.zip

didn't work with XP. The Allion American website appears to be down.
I'll wait for the Lanbit drivers for XP if you can get them from
Lanbit. Thanks for the help! Oh, and the only laptop I have access to
is this one with Windows XP on it.

hi,
These are the two I got form Lanbit India.

Try them out. Lanbit told me that they were having some trouble to get
their products upgraded to WinXP WDM. So I believe they changed their
chipsets to Realtak which was already supported by the XP WDM. This
saved them the trouble (and a lot of money, probably) to try get
windows XP certification.

Try these drivers out and get back to me.

Still no cigar.. I just ended up getting another PCMCIA card that
works! Plug and play baby! Thanks for your help tho... I still
considered this question "answered" because of all of you help. Keep
the $3, you certainly earned it.

Hi aeonphrye,

You remember I told you about how Lanbit told me that they were having
some trouble to get their products upgraded to WinXP WDM. If you get a
new Lanbit card now, the chipset on it is by Realtek (which is WDM
approved) and so XP will accept it straight away. Plug and play, baby
- you're right! I guess after all the waiting and effort, you have
done the right thing.

In fact, I have changed two internal modems on different computers I
had built after XP came in. The new modems are V90 while the earlier
modems would not get recognized by XP at all, and if one tried out the
driver pack with the modem, XP would warn that it is not 'certified'!
So, I had to change 2 cards that were working perfectly!

Thus it is - technology moves ahead leaving a trail of debris....

I think my card must be broken. Vinods went all out to answer my
question. Even contacted manufacturers directly. Highest
recommendations!
