I'd like to open a couple of new credit card accounts for me and my
business. I'll be transferring balances of about $15k - $20k and
leaving them. I'd like to find the best bank/card to deal with - the
one with the lowest rates. I have good credit. I don't care about
miles. I'm open to paying annual fees, whatever it takes to get a good
rate. I know everybody offers zero interest for the first few months,
but that's not what I'm after.

Do you have good credit? The reason I'm asking is my brother gets
offers all the time, besides the 0% interest (for 15 months) cards, I
did see a couple that were 1.75% for life --on balance transfers.

Is that the type of card you're interested in?

Clarification of Question by duffyoung-ga on 13 Apr 2006 21:37 PDT
wow. I was thinking more like 10% apr. But damn, that's low. I'm a
Canadian and I've only been here a couple years, so my credit history
is short. But the score is good, 730 last time I checked. Some firms
may demand a 15 year history or something. If you could just give me a
list of, say, 5 banks that offer great rates ***on balance
transfers*** that would be more than sufficient to answer my question
and earn a great tip!

Do you have a US Corporation? My brother got a bunch of new offers as
soon as he opened his new corp, not that there was a shortage before..

I save all the offers and rotate them based on date because my brother
likes to keep 0% balances on any cards he has in use. He uses three or
four and I simply note the date I transfer a balance and wait till 30
days before the expiration of the 0% and transfer it to a new card
offering 0% for another 15 months. He actually said no to the 1.75%
for life offers, citing it's easy to transfer balances as often as
necessary...ahem...I monitor offers and do it for him, he signs where
I point.

It may be that my brother was on a particular list that was mailed to
for that offer, although he gets them every week.

I just moved, and am unpacking all my boxes still. I saved the office
boxes for last, and I'm almost there. As soon as I find the box(!!) of
offers I'll post the issurer and any applicable 'offer identifier' and
give the phone number to call regarding the offers.

This question is however, open to all researchers to answer in the meantime.

Well I guess I could rotate as you say. Yes, I have three corporations
here in the US, two of them relatively new. I was thinking I'd have to
personally cosign for the new corporations, but you're right, I do
have a bunch of offers in the mail promising 0%apr for a while. Maybe
rotating is best.

Why don't we say the question is complete as soon as I can get that
list of providers you mention?

Sure, sounds good. Still haven't found the box but I'm going to my
brothers this morning, then I have a dentist appointment at 1:30pm
PST, I'll be back around 5pm. My brother gets these all the time,
about 10 a week and we have a box for them at his place too. I'll look
through them and grab the ones we discussed.

http://creditcards.com/low-interest.php

There is one listed at 7.99% on page 2. I haven't seen a card that
low in a while... although I had one "fixed rate" card at 7.99 about 5
years ago and then they raised me to 13% for "increased cost of doing
business in my area". I guess that's normal practice in the credit
card industry.

Cynthia (and this google service) are great indeed :)

As Cynthia illuded to, you do have to keep careful track of your money
if you want to rotate from card to card. I have done that over the
years and it's not too bad, but I am very good at such things as it
sounds like Cynthia is too... however you'll notice that her brother
is not so good on his own. Also, almost every card has a balance
transfer fee that is in addition to the low or 0% interest.
The 1.75% interest on $20k would be $350 per year. That's a
phenomenal deal if you can get it. And probably just as cheap as
rotating your balance (which also looks slightly bad on your credit
history in the future). It will also save you all the hassle of
rotating your money on cards. Also keep in mind that if you have 2
interest rates on the same card (a low balance transfer rate and a
higher purchases rate), then the lower rate is what gets paid off
first. So if you have 0% and 12% on the same card then everything you
pay go towards the 0% balance so the 12% balance will not be paid off
for a long time. So you may wish to keep 1 card for purchases and
another card for balance transfers.
