This could be caused for a number of reasons, you list too few
symptoms, i would try this:

Click Start Button
Hover Over Settings
Click Control Panel
Click "Add or Remove Programs"
remove all of these if they exist:

Microsoft .net Compact Framework 1.0 SP3
    Microsoft .net Compact Framework 2.0
    Microsoft .net Framework 1.1
    Microsoft .net Framework 2.0

ANY OTHER THING STARTING WITH "MICROSOFT .NET COMPACT FRAMEWORK"

NEXT:
Go To <a href=http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en>Download
.net Framework 1.1</a>

You may need to run microsoft's validation tool, which you will follow
directions on the page.

Reboot
Run Aol, Log in again
Did this fix your problem? if not then do the following:
Uninstall AOL using "add remove programs" in the control panel

re-install aol using <a
href=http://download.newaol.com/clients/coffee/aolcombundle2340a/AOLDNLD.EXE>this
link</a>

Run aol, Log in again

Did this fix your problem? if not then do the following:
Go to <a href=http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6978D761-4A92-4106-A9BC-83E78D4ABC5B&displaylang=en>Microsoft</a>
and download service pack 3 for .net framework 1.1

Run Aol, Log in again

and download .net framework 2.2
