Hi redfoxjumps-ga
It doesn't matter, I don't want so specific information. I just need
to get a general idea about the available methods of repairing a
fractured 'MAIN' gas pipeline.

I assume you are talking about a natural gas pipeline. Also, what is
the material (PVC, steel, etc.).

strongdave-ga,
There are only three types of pipeline repairs that I am aware of:
--welding, to close a cracked pipe
--adding a plate (on) or a sleeve (around) a pipe to repair a larger
rupture that cannot be readily welded shut
--replacing a section of pipe entirely
What additional details were you hoping to have by way of an answer?

I only need a simple explanation of the principles of each of the
first two methods.i.e. how would you carry it out? what are the
advantages and disadvantages of using this technique?
Thank you

strongdave-ga,
In addition to the techniques I mentioned -- which are all exterior
repairs -- it is also possible to repair a pipeline from the inside.
Indeed, for pipelines that are hard to access (such as underwater
lines) internal repair may be the option of choice.
The main repair external and internal repair techniques are all
described and contrasted in this online presentation:

Internal Repair of Pipelines
Let me know if that has the information you need, and if not, what
else you would like to know.

Thanks for the document I find it very useful but I still need a more
detailed explanation of these techniques (not too much details).. I am
interested in a brief explanation of the principles of each technique,
advantages and disadvantages.
