I've read about a trademarked type of wood, Lyptus
[http://www.weyerhaeuser.com/ourbusinesses/buildingproducts/buildingmaterials/ourproducts/lyptus/],
which is supposed to be an environmentally-friendly and durable. The
only information I've been able to find online is from manufacturers
of Lyptus or of furniture using Lyptus. Could you point me to
independent assessments of Lyptus to help me decide whether it would
be a good material for bathroom cabinets?

Seems there's not a whole lot out there, but this search on
Google Groups brings up some posts by people with some
experience with it:

lyptus -mentho -mento -menthol
http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=lyptus+-mentho+-mento+-menthol

One of the posts recommended caution with humid locations,
so I don't know how well it would work in bathrooms:

"I handled some Lyptus recently. It's heavy, grain looks very
nice. A friend told me it moves more than oak, so humidity
 might be an issue."

Another post emphasized how very heavy it was:

"I was going to redo my kitchen with it, but when I unloaded
the pile, I was worn out by the time I got to the last board.
This stuff is 'very' heavy and I'm thinking that as raised
panel doors they may be too heavy. It will likely end up as
 furniture and sawdust.

Additionally, this page from the knowledge base on WoodWeb.com
reflects similar concerns with humidity, weight, splinters and
being hard on tooling as are found in the Google Groups posts:
http://www.woodweb.com/knowledge_base/Working_with_Lyptus.html

Let me know where this takes you, and if it satisfies your
interests, I'll post a formal answer...
