NII Question In December 2004 the U.S.Council on Competitiveness issued a ?National Innovation Initiative (NII) Report entitled Innovate America. The Council focuses on ?technological innovation, workforce development and the benchmarking of U.S. economic performance against other countries? (p.68). The Report set forth a number of goals and made recommendations for reaching those objectives. Goal No 1: ?Create a National Consensus Supporting Innovation Growth Strategies? Goal No 2: ?Create a 21st Century Intellectual Property Regime? (i.e. patents, standards, collaboration) Goal No 3: ?Strengthen America?s Manufacturing Capacity? Goal No 4: ?Build 21st Century Innovation Infrastructures?the healthcare test bed? The question is what are the most significant actions, if any, that have been taken toward reaching these goals since the report was issued? To what degree have these actions been successful in jumpstarting an improvement in the competitive position of the U.S. and in fostering greater innovation? |

This site http://www.todaysengineer.org/2006/Mar/innovation-pt1.asp provides some details on the legislation prompted by the report. "In the Senate, a sweeping package called Protect America?s Competitive Edge Act (PACE), and the National Innovation Act await action. And in the House, Democrats have unveiled their innovation agenda, with House Republicans expected to unveil their own shortly. In his State of the Union Address on 31 January, President Bush outlined his American Competitiveness Initiative, designed to spur U.S. innovation and better equip the nation to compete in the global marketplace. With such broad support, it seems likely that some measure of legislation related to innovation and competitiveness will survive the legislative process." I hope this helps. Have a good day. |
