Hi,

The test was published in the Journal of Personality and Social
Psychology, volume 54 number 5 p890-902, 1988.

I found this information by searching the Education Testing Service’s
Test Collection Database at:
http://www.ets.org/testcoll/index.html

The Test Collection is a database with information on thousands of
tests and may be helpful to you in the future.

You can probably obtain the journal article at a college or university
library or perhaps even through a local public library.

I hope this is helpful.

doctoralstudent,

I've hunted around a bit, but get the impression that the full set of
questions appears in the 1979 paper to which everyone refers. Again,
I would suggest you approach your library to get you a copy, so that
you can check it out.

Reference on Medline at PubMed
Psychological Reports 1979 October Vol 45(number 2)590-
A narcissistic personality inventory.
Raskin RN, Hall CS.

(Some references give a different page number: 450)

If your library cannot help, perhaps the following can:

This web site seems to imply that a company called MHS can supply it:
http://www.mhsource.com/disorders/nar.html

"Author: Raskin, Robert R. and Hall, Calvin S.
Title: Narcissistic Personality Inventory
Available: Psychological Reports.1979;45:450.

Description: The narcissistic personality is defined by the following
characteristics: (1) grandiose sense of one's self-importance; (2)
preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance;
(3) exhibitionism; (4) response to criticism, indifference or defeat
with cool indifference or with marked feelings of rage, inferiority,
shame, humiliation, emptiness; (5) entitlement, expecting special
favors without assuming reciprocal responsibilities; (6)
exploitativeness; (7) relationships vacillate between the extremes of
over idealization and devaluation; and (8) lack of empathy.
The test is made up of 223 items that sample the domain of the
narcissistic personality defined by the above characteristics. Each
item is a pair of statements, one narcissistic and the other
nonnarcissistic. Subjects are required to check on of the two
statements.

A company called MHS puts out a comprehensive catalog of psychological
test instruments. Virtually anything you can imagine is in it. You can
write to them at 908 Niagara Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda, NY
14120-2060, or call (800) 456-3003.
*Note: Many tests are only made available to mental health
professionals."

I'm putting this in as a comment rather than as a paid answer, because
it doesn't give you a definite place where you can find what you are
seeking.

Hi doctoralstudent,

I took a swing at your question earlier today also and to avoid any
duplication of effort, I'll post my {lack of} findings as well. A
call to the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing was a
strike-out as well as several other calls to test suppliers IPAT
recommended. All of them referred me to www.ericae.net. Entering
"narcissistic-personality-inventory," {include the hyphens} this was
the only test to pop up.

Descriptive Information
Title: Narcissistic Personality Inventory
Author: Raskin, Robert N. Terry, Howard
Abstract: The Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire (NPI) was
developed to examine the differences in narcissism among individuals
in nonclinical populations. The questionnaire's 40 items were
developed using the definition of narcissism in the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III). The
items cover seven factors related to narcissism: Authority,
Self-Sufficiency, Superiority, Exhibitionism, Exploitativeness,
Vanity, and Entitlement. A forced-choice dyad is used by respondents.
It may be used to examine the relationship between narcissism and
self-ideal self congruency, particularly how self-ideal self
congruency can lead to positive self regard and personal adjustment or
narcissistic ego inflation and personality disturbance. Technical data
are included. (KM)
