Question ID: 720838
How would one create a single iCalendar (rfc2445) event that has a
repeating period of two weeks, but different days on the successive
two weeks? For example, a workout schedule that follows the pattern:
u=Upper Body Workout, a=Aerobic Workout, l=Lower Body Workout, f=Free Day

M T W R F S U
-------------
u a l a u a f
l a u a l a f

and repeat.

I don't seem to be able to come up with an RRULE that would cover this
and multiple RRULEs look like they would require two DTSTARTs which I
don't think is possible. Any gurus out there know of a way to create
a single valid iCalendar event with this repeating pattern?

Meaning that I would like to be able to have an event for Upper Body
Workout that covered MF of one week, W the next, and repeat. Inverse
for Lower Body Workout. At least the Aerobic Workout and Free Day are
easy to schedule... :-)

Hi,

Your problem is esstially a CSP (Constraints Satisfaction Problem). I
know something about it. And your problem is of small scale, and
should not be difficult to solve. However, I know little about the
Aerobics, so if you can help clarify your problem, I might be able to
give you a satisfied solution.

First, you don't want to reapeat any of the four patterns, i.e. u, a,
l, and f, for two successive days. Here, please let's know for how
many days you require or prefer to have a f (off) day.

Second, please tell me what is the minimal number of days you want to
work out for each of those acitivities during the 2-wk period.

If you can clarify the above two points, I will try go for a good
cyclic schedule for you! (or to tell you it is impossible to get such
a schedule.)

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I will try to answer your questions.

1) This is a schedule for doing different workouts throughout the
week. The pattern is to have one free day / week (in this example on
Sunday) and to alternate between weight lifting and aerobic workouts
the other six days of the week. The problem ends up being that you
alternate also the weight lifting workouts between upper body and
lower body. So, combined with the free day, it makes every other week
different (Monday and Friday for doing an upper body workout one week,
and Wednesday the next)

2) There should be 3 upper and lower body workouts each every two
weeks and 6 aerobic workouts. The free day should happen 1/week on
the same day each week.

I hope that answer's your questions. Let me know if I can give you
any more info. Thanks!
