it was a movie about a woman and two children. the husband went off to
hunt and they were attacked by wolves in a cabin in winter time. they
struggled to servive.

don't remember actors names. but the father went off to hunt for
animal fur to sell but i think was killed. the mother had long hair
and i think some indians came along and raped or something and she cut
it off. thats all i remember.

I think the movie you are remembering may be 'Jeremiah Johnson' (1972)
starring Robert Redford.

At one point in the movie, Johnson, who had exiled himself to the
wilderness to become a mountain man, married an Indian woman and had
taken in a young boy whose family had been killed in an Indian attack.
He tried to settle down with his family and build a cabin but was
constantly being attacked by bands of hostile Indians. He set off to
try his hand at becoming a trapper and was terribly mauled by wolves.
Having been nursed back to health by his wife and adopted son he was
approached by the US cavalry who asked him to lead them through the
wilderness to a remote outpost. Johnson agreed to help them and left
for the long journey, leaving his wife and son behind. When he
returned he found that his farm had been attacked and his wife had
been raped and both of them had been savagely murdered by Indians.

It may also be important to note that at the same time that Johnson
built his cabin and tried to settle down (before the wolf attack),
much to the shock and surprise of his wife, who had never seen him
groomed, cut HIS long hair (and beard) in order to look more
"civilized".

Note to researchers:
Customer has indicated that the "Adventures of the Wilderness Family"
series of movies is NOT what s/he has in mind.
