I am wanting to monitor the apache server on my system and want the
full breadth of information that is available. I know about the
various apache log files including the ability to choose which fields
to print via the httpd.conf file. I've also discovered the mod_status
facility that allows me to see status via
http://your.server.name/server-status.

In your answer, I am interested in both the nuts-and-bolts of apache
monitoring (in case I have to write my own) as well as freeware or
commercial programs to monitor apache.

Question 1. Are there other logs or status facilities to get apache
statistics from?

Question 2. Can you point me to free or commercial software programs
that specifically monitor apache. (I've found monitoring programs
that say they do apache, but they only print a few statistics.)

depending on your OS, it's usually /var/log/httpd-error.log and
/var/log/httpd-access.log

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/logs.html for more info.

Some log analysis programs:

You might also try webalizer.

http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/

It interfaces very well on linux/apache systems and has been around for many years.

MRTG pulls lots of cool data from the mod_status module and dumps it
to pretty graphs. Open source, too.
