My internet speed every so often trickles off to zero, most of the
time when I try to start a torrent download - this is awful because I
download nightly updates of A LOT of sourceforge open source programs,
and now the internet breaks every time I try. Once the same thing
happened when I tried to reload about 50 windows in firefox, but that
might have been a fluke. Usually it's by the torrent (program doesn't
matter, using Azureus and uTorrent - both of which I used to use
perfectly). Then the computer shows that I am technically connected,
but I can't do ANYTHING - no web surfing, can't connect to aim, etc.
so I HAVE to restart the PC to get it working. PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!
:)
Background:
1) Hard drive was removed from my older (perfectly functioning
computer and internet setup) and placed in a brand new computer as a
master, so of course, some driver updating involved with the already
installed winXP
2) I use a wireless connection, my usb wifi is the D-Link DWL-120+ -
3Mbps DSL connection, old working speed was about 2500 Kbps in reality
3) Firewall: no windows firewall, ISS Proventia Desktop Protection
4) Virus protection: Norton Antivirus 8.0 (with all uptates)
5) winxp pro OS
6) I have tried completely turning off the firewall, doesn't seem to
change anything
7) can't completely shutdown NA8, and I can't uninstall because I
don't have the reinstall CD here
8) EVERYTHING worked perfectly before, just switch the HD to a new
computer, and this crap started happening, I think that's key...
****$5 tip guaranteed for whoever provides a relatively quick FULLY
WORKING solution to this problem. |

I've tried downloading a "large" file through firefox (openoffice
suite) and it worked fine, no screwups, this only seems to be
influenced by trying to get a torrent file, but it might also be
triggered by something else.
generally the torrent file will start downloading at a crummy speed -
20kb/s or so, then go to 10, then 5, then 0, and bam, internet is DEAD
:( :(

UPDATE: I have simply changed the value of the question from $15->$20,
so please disregard the tip comment in my original question. However,
of course, if I get an awesomely clear answer and explanation and
solution, I will definitely consider tipping - thanks! :)

Hi!!
Ir would help if you can post a Hijackthis log here. But a previous
online antivirus scan is necessary, so:
First thing to do:
Scan your computer online with the following tools from Trend Micro:
(do all the tasks: virus scan and download CWShredder to
remove CoolWebSearch, this is a common pestware that is usually
present on infected computers). Let these tools remove all that they
find.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Second thing to do:
Scan your computer for spyware at Ewido, if you receive a warning
about the installation of an ActiveX object, just let it be installed
and run.
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan
NOTE: if for any reason you cannot perform one of the above tasks just
skip it and continue with the below one.
Third thing to do:
Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program. HJT
needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted
by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your
system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe
Hijackthis is an expert's tool used to remove hijackers and spyware,
but since it works on demand, not automatically, you only need to post
a log here as a clarification and then I will analyze it and tell you
what are the next steps.
To see how to get and post a log here see the following tutorial at
BleepingComputer.com; you will only need to post the log without
fixing
anything, I will tell you which items must be selected to fix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42#HowToUse
Note that on Windows NT, 2000, & XP, it requires that you have
administrator privileges.
Please post the scan log from HijackThis' scan, WITHOUT fixing
anything, and after I analyze it I will tell you what things must be
fixed with HJT. Also let me know what happened with the online scans.
Probably other procedures and products could be necessary to complete
the cleaning.
regards,

Ok, after performing the spyware scan you offered as well as the one
through Ad-aware Personal SE, and performing a complete scan with the
most updated version of McAfee VirusScan 8.0 (I mistakenly said Norton
Antivirus earlier), I am VERY VERY VERY convinced that this is not a
spyware/malware issue, and as such, I will not be performing anything
related to Hijackthis on my PC - it seems highly questionable that it
can delete vital components of the software setup. I believe this has
something to do with the settings in my connection -
I have downloaded a full movie from movielink.com at a rate of about
2600kbps WITHOUT interruptions or dropouts, and have done similar
tasks through my browser (as described before, OpenOffice was
downloaded perfectly). The only times I experience this slowdown is
when I have started any torrent program, and when I have reloaded too
many windows in firefox (40+). I've just confirmed that this problem
doesn't occur on the only other PC on the network (the hardwired to
the router). I think it might have to do with my settings for my usb
wireless adapter. Any thoughts?
