I recall reading a news article or op-ed piece, probably between 1994
and 2000. At the time, I frequently read the Los Angeles Times and
New York Times online, but may also have read from Time, Newsweek or
US News and World Report. The piece described an incident in an
African country suffering from famine. A man came to a relief station
of some kind with his family. He had carried his wife and child to
get there. They were unable to walk, and so he carried one for some
distance, put her down, then walked back and carried the other. I was
very moved by this description, and would like to have the text of the
article, along with bibliographic information for citation. If the
article is still available on the Internet, a URL would also be
welcome.

I asked a similar question recently trying to find an article I'd seen
only a few months previously, and had no luck. It seems your question
is a much larger challenge.

I found the previous question I mentioned earlier.
