I seem to remember websites which involved recruiting licensed drivers
who would drive a car, say from NY to LA for people who were making
the same move but couldn't be bothered to take the trouble to ( or
were not in a position to )do their own driving. Can someone please
direct me to some such sites?
Thanks,
Moss

Hi moss-ga!

I know exactly the company you seek! We?ve used them ourselves and
have been very impressed. We?ve driven a minivan for someone from
Arizona to Pennsylvania. I?m amazed at how simple it is! You have to
have a valid license and a major credit card. You put down a down
payment (that you get back when you return the car) and pay for the
gas (you start with a full tank). That?s it!

You get a certain allotment of miles and days and they purposely give
you some wiggle room with that so that you can play with it a bit and
do some side tripping as you please. You can even use more than the
allotted miles for a fee/mile. Some people, in order to get their cars
back to them sooner, even pay for the gas or offer bonuses of some
kind as incentives. The company is called Auto Driveaway and they have
a great website that you can search by city to see where cars are
available and to where they are to be returned.

Auto Driveaway
http://autodriveaway.com/

On the left hand side, click on ?Available Cars? and begin your
search! That click takes you to this page?the national list.
http://www.autodriveawaydc.com/carlist.html

They list Driver Requirements as follows:

?- If you are at least 23 years of age or older with a valid driver's
license (foreign travelers also need a passport with valid exit visa),
you can travel the United States with Auto Driveaway Company.

- A refundable security deposit of approximately $350.00, check with
the office that you are driving for to get the exact amount and method
of payment on deposit.

- You will receive the first full tank of gasoline, a certain number
of days and an appropriate amount of miles to complete your trip!

- A current MVR (motor vehicle driver?s record) for ALL drivers will
be needed when you arrive at the office to pick up the vehicle. If you
do not have a MVR, one will be generated at a cost to the driver(s).
Foreign travelers must bring a current Motor Vehicle Record from your
home country.?

So, apparently they?ve added that MVR since we?ve used their company.
But it?s still fairly simple to work with them!

In looking over the current list, I see a lot of cars available with
gas allowances, some even paying ?all gas!? With gas prices being as
they are, that?s fantastic!

I hope that you find this information helpful. My personal advice to
you is to check that page frequently as they update it often. Please
let me know if you have need of any further clarification. I wish you
luck!

Sincerely,
Boquinha-ga

Hello boquinha,

Thanks for the answer. It's good to hear from someone who has actually
dealt with the company.
I was hoping to get a few othercompanies as well as the choice is more
limited than I expected.

Any further suggestions?

Regards,

Moss

Hello moss-ga!

I, too, was actually surprised at how few options there seem to be out
there for this type of thing. There was an answer on Google Answers
nearly two years ago on this topic (see
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=721548#a answered by
Eiffel-ga) so I checked into one of the other companies that were
suggested. One of these, Custom Auto Delivery (www.driveaway.com)
seems to no longer offer this service. They are currently looking for
professional drivers to drive customer?s cars, or they offer a truck
transport service. Other links on this answer mention Auto Driveaway,
but no other similar companies.

Apparently, the Toronto Drive-Away (www.torontodriveaway.com) service
is still operational, but basically limited to cars into and out of
Toronto to a few locations, so if the NY to LA example is what you
want, this service won?t help.

I ran a few more searches and came up with the same information. Looks
as though I found you about the only company that offers this
nationwide any more. I hope this information helps. Good Luck!

Sincerely,
Boquinha-ga
