Question ID: 721592
I am looking for the name of an obscure 80's band. Style was likely
new romantic or synthpop. Probably prior to 1985. Had both a female
and male voice. I am fairly confident it was a band that started with
"The" followed by a single word. The bartender at a Brooklyn bar
played this record and told me the name but I have since forgotten.

Hi Andrewc75,
Let me try to list artists from my own knowledge, with some of their
song titles in parentheses, and let's if one of them comes close (I
omitted 'the' intentionally):

Dollar (Give Me Back my Heart, Nature's Way)
Deacon Blue (Real Gone Kid)
Jane Wiedlin and Sparks (Cool Places)
Eurogliders (Heaven)
Limahl (Neverending Story)
Missing Persons
Fleetwood Mac

These guesses are long shots, but if ever you get a listen and could
confirm, please tell me. Thanks and happy listening.

Siouxsie and the Banshees may not be so obscure, but I'll add it anyway to the list.

Hi techtor,
Thanks for the guesses, but I am familiar with every one of those
bands other than The Eurogliders, and these aren't it. I did like
Eurogliders music though!

It may have been female voice only. Add new wave to the style.

And it wasn't synthpop.

Thanks for the clarification. At least we're narrowing it down through
the band rundown. And yeah, the Eurogliders were great, especially
with the song Heaven. Nothing beats 80's wave. Sure brings back
memories...

OK, let's get on then. I'll try other bands I've just remembered,
those with female vocals and have been described as New Wave:

Til Tuesday (Voices Carry)
The Primitives (Crash)
Mo (Asia)
Romeo (Girl in Trouble)
Everything But The Girl
April Showers
March Violets
The Pretenders (not obscure, but with 'the')

Hope any of these names ring a bell.

There are some more obscure artists in this last bunch but alas none
of them are what I was looking for although I am checking out Romeo
Void some more. The song did not sound like Girl In Trouble so I will
have to listen to more RV to be sure it's not them. I talked to my
friend who was with me and he said he's pretty sure it was "The R...."
where the second word was long and started with R. Not The
Replacements. I vaguely remember having heard the female voice from
another band/solo and the bartender maybe saying it was a joint effort
between groups. Not to add further confusion. I suppose I could just
call the bar.

Your statement that the band is "obscure" and one that you've "not
heard before" is subjective. We have no way of knowing what you've
heard and what you haven't. With that in mind, though they are not
really "obscure", could the band be 'The Eurythmics'?

tutuzdad,
You're right - "obscure" is very objective. I have a fairly extensive
knowledge of 80s music, so one could assume that any band that had a
large hit in the 80s, I know. This includes Eurythmics, Fleetwood Mac,
Human League, Bow Wow Wow, The Pretenders, etc. The reason I call it
obscure is that when the bartender told me the name, I had never heard
it before. So when searching for this band, name recognition does not
come into play. Does that give a better idea?

The Human League? They sang "Don't You Want Me, Baby".

Thanks for the response, but I did say obscure. It was a band name and
song that I had never heard before.

Whoops "Romeo (Girl in Trouble)" should have been "Romeo Void (Girl in Trouble)"

Mystery solved. It came to me that the bartender mentioned one of this
band's songs was covered by Nirvana. I just googled "bands who covered
nirvana" and found the answer at
http://www.livenirvana.com/whoiswho/j-r.php.

The band is THE VASELINES. I found them on allmusic.com and listened
to the snippets again. The bar made them sound like an early 80's new
wave band. They are not, so I apologize for the wrong information.
They are classified by allmusic as indie pop/rock. There is both a
male and female voice present. The song "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A
Sunbeam" was on Nirvana's MTV Unplugged disc and apparently Cobain was
good friends with Eugene Kelly, one of the two members of the
Vaselines.
