Question ID: 721945
I have dreamweaver version 4.0 and am having difficulty creating buttons.

I clicked on "Insert / Flash Button" and entered some configuration
information, but it apparently saves the information as a file called
BUTTON2.SWF.

How do I get the button to appear on the web page?

Thanks.

Hi Skip9801,

Was the button itself made in Flash,Paint Shop Pro, or Adobe, or are
you creating the button within Dreamweaver? Please let me know, and
I'll take it from there.

Crabcakes,

Thanks for responding so quickly. I've actually now figured out the
first part of how to make the flash button. While I'm in Dreamweaver
(version 4.0), I click on INSERT and then INTERACTIVE IMAGES and then
FLASH BUTTON.

I'm having a problem now with what the flash button links up to
(sometimes a web site, sometimes a pdf file, etc.). The page I'm
working on has a left frame and a right frame. The flash buttons are
on the left frame. Problem is that when I click on the flash button
it brings up the link but only in the left frame.

Could you direct me as to how I could have the linking item be brought
up as the entire screen?

Thanks.

When I test the buttons and click on them

Also, is there a way to make one of the buttons act as an email link?
That is, when you click on the button it will work to send an email?

Thanks again.

Hi again,

Have you tried creating the button in Flash, saving it to the same
folder as your Dreamweaver site, and then inserting it, using the
Insert Interactive Object? I always create buttons in Flash first.

According to this tutorial, you can make buttons from within
Dreamweaver. Did you follow all these steps?
http://www.webthang.co.uk/Tuts/tuts_dmx/dmx_flashbuts/dmx_fbuts.asp

This tutorial is more in-depth:
http://www.webmonkey.com/webmonkey/01/01/index1a_page5.html?tw=authoring

As to the link... when inserting the button, did you select blank,
parent, top, etc.? If you want to link to a new page, you'll have to
select Link, and click on a created page on your hard drive (a page
that is to be, or already is, on the host server, or enter the
complete URL of an already published page.)

For an e-mail link, select the button, go to Insert, select Email
link. Since the button already has (I'm assuming) text on it, leave
the Email link box for Text blank, and type in just the email address
you desire. By using Dreamweaver email link, you do not have to enter
the mailto: , Dreamweaver will handle it.

Not to discourage you from using Flash (I love it myself), but it IS
a bandwidth hog! Folks on dial-up will have a longer download time to
see your page. Keep in mind too that not everyone has a Flash Player
installed on their PC. It will depend on your target audience.

Let me know how you are proceeding!

I've been able to get the file that links from the button to use the full screen.

Thanks very much for your great suggestions!
