I've become a Real Rhapsody-Yahoo Music junkie lately and would love
to set it up so that I can stream music from these services from my
computer to different rooms in my apartment. I know there are a
number of devices that allow you to do this (e.g., Roku). What I'm
looking for is the best set-up to do the following:

-Stream music wirelessly from my laptop computer on the main level of
my apartment to a stereo in the same room of the apartment.
*and*
-Stream music wirelessly from my laptop computer on the main level of
my apartment to a stereo in a bedroom on the 2nd level of my
apartment.

I know that Roku or the other similar devices would allow me to do one
or the other but not both (I don't think). I'd live to find a set-up
that would allow me do both. Ideally the whole set-up would be under
$250.

By the way, my laptop is an IBM Thinkpad T43 running Windows XP.

Thanks in advance for any help!

One of the simplest ways is to hook up the audio output from your PC
to a small FM transmitter. Set the transmitter's frequency to a space
on the dial of an FM radio that contains no station (find the space
on your receiver first, then tune the transmitter until you hear the
music), then all you need is stereo FM receivers in the rooms where
you want the music. Chances are, both the stereos you mentioned have
FM recievers on them.

Here's a page of this type of FM transmitter, on Hobbytron:
http://www.hobbytron.com/MiniFMTransmitter.html

Since one of the rooms you want to reach is on the 2nd level, I'd
look for a unit with a high range of transmission, such as the 2nd
one on the page:

Let me know what you think. If this satisfies your needs, I'll
post it as a formal answer...

This seems like it could work although I forgot to mention something:
I live in Los Angeles where there is precious little available space
on the dial. I've tried one of the mobile FM transmitter devices (the
iTrip) and didn't have all that good of results but that could have
been because I was driving in the car. I guess it wouldn't be too
tough or expensive to try this but I'm wondering if there might be
another solution that would avoid having to using the radio spectrum.

This product from Samsung uses the 2.4Ghz wireless range to
transmit up to 250 feet. I couldn't locate any detailed specs,
and it seems hard to find in stock. Here's some links:

Axession MP3-S MP3 Wireless Digital Audio Sender
(the wireless speakers on the first page might be useful, too)

Let me know what you think...
