I am unable to download photos from my Canon SD500 to my PC. The
camera downloads to a Mac just fine, but for some reason it does not
download to my PC. I have loaded all the software, but ZoomBrowser EX
fails to acquire images from my camera (gives me an error that the
CameraWindow is already running). The computer recognizes the
hardware, but when I tried to acquire images from it (as though it
were a separate drive) it tells me the camera is busy. I tried
uninstalling an reinstalling the software that came with the camera
with no improvement. I tried to google a response, found a message
board with similar complaints of using the SD500 with Windows XP, but
none of these seemed to work...and Canon has been unresponsive to my
requests. Please help if you can... |

Canon responded with the following questions, my answers to which may help you:
1. Which version of Windows XP is being used on this computer?
Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 1
2. Aside from the camera, keyboard, monitor, and mouse, what devices
are connected to the computer?
Speakers. Sometimes an Ipod or Sony videocamera, but not while I was
attempting to acquire my photos.
3. Is the camera being connected to a USB port in the back of the
computer?
No, a USB port in the front of the computer.
4. When turned on to the playback mode and connected to a USB port in
the back of your XP system, does the camera appear in the Device
Manager? To check this:
Yes - notes below.
a. Click on your Start button and select Control Panel.
b. When the Control Panel opens, double-click on Performance and
Maintenance then System (if you are in Category View) or System (if you
are in Classic View). You should now have the System Properties window.
c. Click on the tab labeled Hardware.
d. Click on Device Manager.
In the list that appears, look for a category called Imaging Device(s),
Other Devices, or Universal Serial Bus Controllers. The camera may
appear under any of those categories. If you see the camera listed,
right-click on it and select Properties.
5. In this window, what is shown under Device Status?
"This device is working properly.
If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to
start the troubleshooter."
6. Is there a Code number under Device Status (ie. Code 28)?
No.

Try downloading Picasa (it's free).
http://picasa.google.com/
After installing Picasa, connect your camera to the computer via USB
and turn it on. Wait a moment for Windows to ask you what program to
use, and select Picasa. Or if that somehow doesn't work, start Picasa
while the camera is connected and select "Import" on the top left of
the window (just to the right of the Picasa logo). If you see your
camera listed, select it and let Picasa do the rest.
Let me know if this works, and if you will accept this approach as an Answer.

Yes, it does.
I actually walked through a 23 minute call with Canon which was far
more difficult, but I was able to make it work.
Picasa took two minutes to load and worked immediately. The editing
features are simple, this was easily worth $5, thanks.
