I think your tutor is being sarcastic Try representing the crossword puzzle as a 2D matrix of records - remember 17 down and 17 across might be valid - consider the fields for a cell in a crossword Then for no good reason turn it into XML - and back again Either your tutor is very smart, or he is very dim. XML just represents nested records - personally I don't use it, we 'discovered it in 1990' and found it handy for certain applications - but not for most. |

Hi, thanks for adding your comment. I have alreay made the code for all this to work, its just the crossword knowledge (creation etc) I need now. I'm using previously made crosswords (http://tinyurl.com/nb268) then using my own XSLT pages (http://tinyurl.com/oxddx) to generate the sql/layout etc. Process here: XML Crosswords -> XSLT -> SQL -> MySQL Db -> XSQL -> XSLT - > XHTML PS - Sadly cannot use matrix/arrays with XSLT :( |

This puzzle is thought to be the world's first crossword: http://thinks.com/crosswords/first2.htm An explanation can be found here: http://thinks.com/crosswords/first1.htm Try doing a web search for the name "Will Shortz." He's the crossword puzzle editor for the New York Times. He's given many interviews over the years, and some of them include puzzle-making and puzzle-solving tips. A bit of Shortz trivia: He's the first person to get a university degree in crossword puzzles. Also search for the word "cruciverbalist." G'luck, dtc |
