A web site listed an IRC number for support contact. Using mIRC, or another IRC client, how can I "call" this number? All documentation I have found talks about joining a "channel", i.e., chat group, and then going on to a private chat with someone who happens to already be logged into the chat room -- but that does not seem to cover the case of someone listing an IRC NUMBER for contact, as if he were giving out a telephone number. | |

i think your either getting mixed up with "call" as in someones username or i found a page that lists a number as IRC: 3333...etc but this stands for the Intructional Resource Center http://www.ashland.edu/library/irc/books.htm . The only other explanation is that , "call" could be a custom function of someones script. but you need to be logged on to the correct network (and channel) and in any case this isn't the type of thing your describing. they could have also listed it as a number such as call #29293 this could be a channel name, but they should have listed the network. |

If the number had also dots between numbers ;-) then... Maybe this number was the address of the IRC server. So You have to type : /server thisnumber |

In mirc client, you can connect that server and prot by typing /server name_of_server:port_number I think IRC number may be port number. |

I think you are looking for a CHANNEL that uses numbers only. some wise guys in IRC will give you a ChannelName that is numbers only and will identify them by #234-3456-789. Which can be a valid Channel/Room. The #(pound/number sign) is a designator for IRC channels. This has been the standard since inception. just as @ for the separator in email. 1. They should tell you which 'Undernet' server they will be on. 2. They should tell you the Channel name (which will be identified by #ThisChannelName) 3. They should tell you their User Name. There is a user to user messenger system but you have to be on the same IRC server/networks (undernet for example) There can be the same name on several different servers. QuakeNet EFNet UnderNet IRCNet These are some of the larger ones. With EFNet and the Undernet being some of the oldest. See http://www.mirc.com/servers.html for more complete list Hope that helps |
