I am often forced to type (manually) some text
from the Internet into my MS Word documents
because the source ?text? is really an image.

I have a Lexmark X1100 (printer, copier, scanner, OCR).

I could (if I wanted) do two things with my Lexmark:
(1) print the image onto paper, and then
(2) scan the paper for OCR processing.

But I wonder if I could avoid printing and scanning:

If I?ve already got the image in my computer,
isn?t there some way of telling the Lexmark system
not to bother printing and scanning?
Just do the OCR translation from ?this here? image.

Hi Rambler,

Yes you can.

1 Open the Lexmark X1100 Series All-In-One Center.

2 If the Scan? section of the All-In-One Main Page is not expanded,
click See More Scan Settings.
3 Click Display Advanced Scan Settings.
4 From the Scan tab, select Convert scanned item to text (OCR).
5 Click OK to save your changes and return to the All-In-One Main Page.
6 Choose the file to scan from your pc
7 On the right hand under 'Creative Tasks' choose 'Edit' ABC.
8 Select the text editor you will be using
9 Click 'Send Now' to scan your image.

Note if a box opens up asking you to choose a resolution stay with
100, for some reason making the resolution greater makes the scan
worst.

I saved your post as an image and scanned it to give you an idea of what you'll get

As you can see it can be done but you will need to manually fix it.

Good luck

I'm having trouble with your step 6: "Choose the file to scan from your pc".
It is not obvious to me how to do this.

Note: The image that I want to translate is NOT in an image file.
It is in an MS Word document. In other words, after I found and captured
the image from the Internet, I saved it inside a Word doc.

So,
(a) I need to tell Lexmark to open up the Word document in order to
get at the image, or
(b) I need to learn how to create a .jpg file, or
(c) I need to tell Lexmark that the image is in the clipboard.

Can I do any of these? I would especially love to do item (c): tell Lexmark
to get the image right out of the clipboard.

Thank you very much for your help so far. I am very encouraged!

hmm I don't use MS word but I would imagine it would have to save the
image in an image format somewhere, while you could search for it I
believe it would be a lot easier for you to save it as an image file
elsewhere and then scan that.

The simplest way to save it as an image (again I don't know MS word)
would be to press ctrl/prt scr at the same time paste that onto paint
and save it somewhere after trimming what you don't need.

For step six (to choose the file you want) on the top left hand of the
'All in One Center' there are three options, the second one 'View
Saved Images' will open your 'My Pictures' folder by default, on the
right, above your picture thumbnails you have two options choose
'Change Folder' and navigate to were you've saved your file.

You can not do it out of the clipboard, the image needs to be saved
somewhere so that the program can convert it into characters it can
recognize then export to a text editor.

Ok, got it.

I just pasted the image into Paint and saved it somewhere as a .jpg.
Later I was able to select it for Lexmark.

(The OCR results are crummy. I probably spend as much time cleaning up
the results as I would if I had just re-typed the whole thing
manually.)

In any case, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!!
