From a November 2005 KPMG Golf Course Development Cost Survey:
?Recent research confirms that there are approximately 32,000 golf
courses worldwide. Presently, some 50 million people play golf
throughout the world.
Although the United States represents the largest golf market in the
world with around 17,000 courses and approximately 27 million golfers,
the game itself originates in Europe and continues to have a strong
presence there, with more than 6,000 golf courses and roughly 4
million registered golfers.?

According to Darragh McGowan, there are 30,730 golf courses worldwide.
?Globally golf is a $60 billion industry with 30,730 golf courses
worldwide and 57 million golfers. In Ontario there are 700 golf
courses and 2.3 million golfers.?
