I'd like to identify parking areas in the largest 20 U.S. cities. I
believe there are about 35,000 paid parking facilities (lots and
garages where you are charged a fee to park) in the U.S. but I've
never seen that figure broken down by city. If someone can provide a
reliable count of paid parking areas by city I'd be happy ($25). And
if someone could provide a list of those lots and garages (including
location, ownership, etc.) I'd be really happy ($150).

ralber-ga,

Seems to me like your best, easiest source of information might be the
Yellow Pages.

Here are the listings for 301 Parking Facilities in Chicago:

http://www.yellowpages.com/sp/yellowpages/ypresults.jsp?q=parking+facilities&rType=headingtext&id=11&p=1&v=3&t=0&st=IL&s=2&ci=chicago&_requestid=18836

It's not a precise count...there are probably some company offices
listed here, and I'm sure there are pay lots that don't have Yellow
Pages listings. Still...it seems to put you pretty squarely in the
ballpark.

Does that help, at all?

Hello ralber-ga,

I?ve been researching your question and I?ve found some industry
resources that might be of interest to you but I haven?t been able to
locate anything that summarizes the breakdown of paid parking
facilities by geographic location.

I?ve found some reports that identify the largest companies in the
parking industry. Some preliminary research on these companies shows
that they have operations in many states. Searching their websites,
it?s possible to identify where they have parking lots and services.
The information from several of these large companies would have to be
aggregated to come up with city totals. Would this be of interest to
you?

In addition, I?ve also started researching the parking authorities in
some of the top cities. I was able to locate a resource for San
Francisco that provides a full listing of all municipal and commercial
parking facilities. I think this is the information you would like to
find for all of the top 20 cities. I don?t know if this information
will be available for all the cities.

The top 20 cities according to the US Census are:

I don?t think your question is answerable as you have it framed. I
suggest that if you find the information I?ve found acceptable that
you post a new question to my attention.

Here are the links for San Francisco. I hope this will work for you.
If I find information for additional cities I will post it here as a
request for clarification and you can then post another question for
me.
