Can someone help me find an online store where I can order the
Pharmatex sponge?
It appears that this product is only sold in Europe (uses benzalkonium
chloride as its spermicide), and I haven't had much luck finding any
stores that sell it online. The store needs to accept either Visa or
Mastercard and ship internationally.
I've tried ordering from Global Health Options (www.g-h-o.co.uk), but
their website has not been updated in two years and they have not
responded to my e-mail requests so I can only assume that they are no
longer filling orders.
This product may also be listed as "Pharmatex tampon" or "Tampon
Pharmatex." is currently manufactured by Innotech International.
I am looking for a link directly to a product page where I can place
the order online. It would be nice if the site were available in
English, but as long as I can tell what I'm ordering and be able to
decipher the order form, that's not mandatory.
Thanks!
P.S. Tip for a good answer! |

Are you located in the US? Would you be interested in other
contraceptive sponges as well, or if I am unable to locate the
specified brand?

Yes, I am located in the U.S. Because of a nonoxynol-9 (N-9) allergy,
I need a contraceptive that does not contain N-9.
As far as I know, there are only two other types of contraceptive
sponge on the market: the Today and the Protectaid. However, they
both contain N-9.
However, I am open to alternative spermicidal contraceptives that
contain benzalkonium chloride (BZK). I have read that there are
vaginal contraceptive suppositories using BZK which would be an
acceptable alternative.

I've been unable to locate the Pharmatex sponge, and they appear to no
longer be available. I've searched online pharmacies from Canada,
France, Mexico, and Spain, to no avail. I have found another brand of
sponge without Non-oxynol 9, but some people sensitive to N9 may be
sensitive to this as well.

crabcakes -
Thanks for all your leg work on this! I had a suspicion that the
product may be made any more given my own difficulty locating it.
Did not realize that there was another brand beyond Today, Protectaid,
or Pharmatex. Does it use octoxynol-9? Would be willing to consider
an octoxynol-9-based contraceptive as it appears indicated as an
alternative for those with nonoxynol 9 allergy.
Thanks!

Hi again Davienne,
Yes, the Protectaid sponge is the one to which I was referring.
It contains F-5 gel, not N-9. Have you tried this brand of sponge?
"The Protectaid Sponge is a unique barrier device made of polyurethane
foam impregnated with F-5 Gel. The Today Sponge is polyurethane with
Nonoxynol 9. Compare them for yourself with this affordable combo of
one dozen of each."
Have you considered this form of birth control?
"One of the newest contraceptives on the market, NuvaRing®, available
by prescription only, consists of a soft, flexible, transparent, ring
that measures approximately 2.1 inches in diameter. It contains a
combination of estrogen and progestin hormones (ethinyl estradiol and
levonorgestrel). After it is inserted into the vagina, these hormones
are slowly released on a continual basis. You need to insert a new
ring each month for continuous contraception. You can insert the ring
yourself into your vagina, where it should remain for three weeks.
Then you remove the ring for one week, during which you have your
period."
