Question ID: 724079
To celebrate her 16th birthday on 8 May, Daisy (my Yorkshire Terrier)
has pleasure in inviting one and all to guess her Kennel Club name. It
consists of two names: the first with 8 characters; the second with 7
characters.

For the record, her parents were: Merritayl Charming Billy and Nimac
Dolly Bell and among her ancestors were three Champions: Ozmilion
Distinction, Ozmilion Jubilation and Ozmilion Tradition. (Well you
can?t choose your parents or your ancestors, can you?)

CLUE: It seems that one letter was inadvertently omitted from one
of her names which, otherwise, would have formed the title of a
popular song of yesteryear. The omission makes an organic difference.

Further clues may be introduced if necessary. However, I fear that
bobbie7-ga, pinkfreud-ga et al will solve this with frightening ease,
as usual. I solved it myself within 10 minutes.

Please post your suggestions AS COMMENTS and the GAR who makes the first
correct submission will be invited to post an answer on 8 May UNLESS a VUC
(Very Uncommon Commenter) has got in there first, in which case the
Question will be closed to the (silent) accompaniment of Handel?s
Hallelujah Chorus.

PLEASE NOTE: A maximum of only three suggestions are allowed per
person; transgressors will have ALL their attempts struck out of the
reckoning.

As the runners power-up their computers, the Bookmakers are offering
the following odds:

answerfinder-ga - Evens
bobbie7-ga ? Evens
bowler-ga ? Evens
myoarin-ga - Evens
pafalfa-ga ? Evens
palitoy-ga - Evens
pinkfreud-ga ? Evens
politicalguru-ga ? Evens
steph53-ga ? 50 to 1 (A blonde)
kemlo-ga ? 10,000 to 1 (A complete outsider)

The Rest: 10-1

C?mon VUCs show Daisy what you are made of!

Many thanks

Bryan

The odds on frde-ga are now 25,000 - 1.

I repeat: Daisy's full name comprises two names: the first with 8
characters; and the second with 7 characters.

For example MARIGOLD STEFANY.

CLUE #2:

One of the words begins with the letter 'B'; the other one doesn't.

Really .... It's SO easy!

Clarification of Question by probonopublico-ga on 02 May 2006 03:30 PDT
NOTE: Kennel Club names are chosen by the breeder; and are absolutely
nothing to do with me!

CLUE #3:

The Singer/Songwriter who penned the hit number upon which Daisy's
Kennel Club name was probably based (subject to the loss of a letter)
is still alive and well.

So, this rules out Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Noel Coward and Wolfy
Mozart, among others.

Clarification of Question by probonopublico-ga on 03 May 2006 01:27 PDT
Yes, Hammer, but when was 'Ozmilion Birland' (plus 1 character) in The Charts?

CLUE 4:

The song in question was a BIG HIT by a well-known group; and a later
version by a solo singer also did well.

I fear that I am now making this SO EASY that Kemlo will now out-perform the GARs.

Hi Hammer

I said:

UNQUOTE

To clarify, BOTH Daisy's names form the title of a song provided that
one letter is added to one of her names.

Hi, Answerfinder

The Song was a Hit post-1950 but it doesn't seem to have made #1 in the UK.

Omigod ... I'm pretty sure that I've now given the game away.

Ah well, I couldn't wish for anyone better to strike lucky.

All the Best

Well done Rainbow!

Yes - you are on the right track but with the wrong song.

Sadly, you have also exceeded the max number of suggestions allowed per person:

[QUOTE]

PLEASE NOTE: A maximum of only three suggestions are allowed per
person; transgressors will have ALL their attempts struck out of the
reckoning.

[UNQUOTE]

I shall therefore have to refer your entries to our learned team of
judges that comprises Charles Clarke, John Prescott and Jack Straw,
all of whom now have more time on their hands.

I fear the worst because they are a vindictive crowd.

Bryan

Clarification of Question by probonopublico-ga on 05 May 2006 09:31 PDT
The Judges have given their ruling on the case of rainbow-ga ...

Charles Clarke, the Chairman, said that if we can give foreign
murderers and rapists a further chance rather than deport them then we
can also be lenient with rainbow.

John Prescott concurred, saying 'Anyone can make a mistake'.

Jack Straw said nothing, as usual.

So, CASE DISMISSED!

CLUE #5:

Folks from the UK, the US and even Canada have been associated with
hit versions of the song in question which was also used in an
advertising campaign by a mega Internet player.

(No it wasn't Gurgle.)

You were exonerated, ie found NOT GUILTY, and therefore free to have 3
further guesses but please note that CLUE #1 specified that:

Keep on dreaming, Myoarin, if you win this the Commenters will declare you a Saint.

Saint Myo ... Yes it sounds great.

After all, yesterday was the Sinko de Mayo, a National Day of Mourning
in Mexico, when a cargo of Mayonnaise was lost at sea.

Tomorrow is Daisy's big day and nobody has come even close to naming
either her Kennel Club name or the hit song in question!

So here is CLUE #6:

As you might expect, Daisy will be having a Birthday Party to which
all her friends will be invited: Zak the Alsatian; George the
Labrador; Dennis the Springer Spaniel; Chaos the Ferret; Lily the Cat;
and Pixie the Guinea Pig.

I am planning to take them to the Zoo where - would you believe? - I
am sure they will be highly entertained by the Lions, the Tigers and
especially the Monkies.

Well I can dream can't I?

Clarification of Question by probonopublico-ga on 07 May 2006 10:50 PDT
Wow, Rainbow

Not quite but almost!

Quick now ...

Post Daisy's Kennel Club name, as registered, and you may yet win this
one for the GARs ...

Unless, of course, the Mity Myo can score a last minute winner for the
VUCs, whilst Answerfinder is still a-pondering.

Isn't it exciting?

What's more Lancashire have just beaten Northants in the C&G. Right
now, they are top of the world but, as you would expect, Daisy
supports Yorkshire.

Please note there are no clues in this Clarification and there will
now be no more clues!

Good luck!

Bryan

Rainbow

Congratulations!

As silly as it may seem, the name on her Kennel Club Certificate is:

Daydream Beliver

(Which makes an organic difference without the 'e'.)

So please post your Answer and collect the Prize.

Many thanks

I am just a VCC (very common commenter) and can only suggest some
ideas that are absolutely out of the running (and which occurred to
me before I saw the clues):
Black-eyed Susan or Leucanthemum vulgare (but Daisy would never have
been named after something vulgar), nor Bellis perennis, but at least
these provide an organic difference.

Okay, here's my guess :" Dancing Matilda " ???

Let me know if I get an invite,

PS, Happy Birthday Daisy !!!

It puzzles me as to why Daisy would want another name. Daisy is such
a delightful name and if I was a gril that is the name I would choose.
Daisy-ga, the name just trips off the tongue

"Birdland".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Zawinul

A huge hit which predates Daisy's birth, whose writer is still alive
and which was covered by a number of other solo and group artists. You
said only one word of her name (plus one letter) made up the song
title. Is it both words now?

Subject: Re: GARs v VUCs: A Competition

@Hammer

It is (or rather was) not entirely clear, but the song title is /both/ words.

Sort of like : 'Amazing Grace' or 'Lady Madonna'

I also suspect a pun as: 'Nimac Dolly Bell' is 'Manic Dolly Bell'

This puzzle is a bit of a 'bitch' (:

Still thinking. I've gone through all the UK no.1s since 1950 and
cannot spot it. Am I in the right period? Or do I have to wait for
another clue?

Bohemian Rhapsody?

That would make her name one of these:

Bohemian Hapsody
Bohemian Rapsody
Bohemian Rhasody
Bohemian Rhapody
Bohemian Rhapsdy
Bohemian Rhapsoy
Bohemian Rhapsod

Am I on the right track?

I'll chime in with "Broadway Lullaby", with some letter missing from Broadway.

I know, the song is really titled "Lullaby of Broadway", but a search
in "" still finds BL.

"Beautiful Dreamer" would also be a great registered name for Daisy,
but Stephen Foster is long since dead. "Beatiful Dreamer" could even
pass as intentional - not a misspelling: Dreamer full of Grace -
has an almost saintly quality, very appropriate for 16 year-old dog.
Maybe that would also qualify as an organic difference.

Ah, I just discovered 712 hits on "Beatiful Dreamer", all misspellings
of Foster's song, but one give a reference to a Beatles' recording.
Could there be a mistake about the author, an assumption that any
Beatles song must have been by a contemporary??

Before anyone else carps that broadway only has 8 letters, ...
next time I will count with my fingers.

I don't want to become a saint for a long time, hoping I have many
years of sinning ahead me before I change my ways. I just want to
hear you all stand up and sing: "For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth
..."

In praise of the Almighty, of course. ;)

"Daydream Believer" by the Monkees

"Several other artists have covered the song. Anne Murray included it
on her 1979 album I'll Always Love You; the following year her single
peaked at #1 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart, #3 on the country
chart, and #12 on the overall pop chart. John Stewart also included
the song on one of his solo albums."

"The Monkees version of the song was used in an advertising campaign
for eBay beginning in 2005. Alluding to a line from the song's chorus,
"Oh, what can it mean ...", the campaign features the slogan,
"Whatever it is, you can get it on eBay."

Daisy's name: Daydream Believe.

Daydream Belever or Daydream Beliver.

And congratulations from me, Rainbow! And to Daisy - late on the eve
of her birthday - for living so long! Apparently, Bryan is a very
good companion, despite his rabid enthusiasm as a cricket fan, a
quiet, contemplative housemate, as one would expect a writer to be -
certainly not one to excite an old girl's heart. ;)
Great puzzle, despite the side-tracking details of her ancestors' names.

Cheers, Myo
