What does it mean to be ?English? over the course of the ?long?
eighteenth century?  How does the idea of English national identity,
especially as it is expressed in literary content and style, take
shape during this period?  Are there distinct ideas of English-ness,
and are these distinctions premised on significant class or gender
differences?
