The 2000 Florida Legislature passed a bill creating two law schools; one at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, another at Florida International University. After years of bitter debate between Blacks (primarly Democrats) and Hispanics (primarly Republican e.g., Cuban, in Florida) the legislation passed in the 2000 legislative session was bipartisan; both Democrats and Republicans, Blacks and Hispanics supported it. Was there a coalition between Blacks and Hispanics (Democrats and Republicans) in 1999 that moved law school legislation out of any committee or either Chamber? (Details such as which committee or Chamber are welcomed.) FYI: A key players in the Hispanic leadership is Mario Diaz-Balart; a key player in the Democratic party is probably Al Lawson. |
