New York Times; New York, N.Y.; Sep 21, 2000
"Charging different prices for humans and animals, or different prices
to consumers in different countries, is what economists call
''third-degree price discrimination.'' It is a common practice for
pharmaceutical companies. A month's supply of the antidepressant
Zoloft sells for $29.74 in Austria, $32.91 in Luxembourg, $40.97 in
Mexico and $64.67 in the United States?.
Drugs in rich countries tend to cost more than drugs in poor countries."
Prescription drugs are often named differently in different countries.
After this long introduction, here is my question:
Can you direct me to a database that lists the names of U. S. drugs
AND their equivalent commonly used brand names in other countries?
Important! This is not limited to Canada! I am looking for a database
that lists the U. S. name and a long list of countries next to it. If
there is information about the price of the drug in other countries or
the manufacturer's address in the foreign country, it's even better.
Here is an example: The drug ?Phenobarbital? which is used for the
treatment of epilepsy is called ?Fenobarbital? in the Dominican
Republic and in Mexico.
There are numerous databases on the web that list U. S. drugs.
Example: http://www.drugs.com/
Do you see how many prescription drugs are listed on http://www.drugs.com?
The goal is to find a database that lists the NAMES of the
prescription drugs in other countries. I certainly don?t look for a
dictionary or a short list of a few prescription medications. I am
mostly interested in a comprehensive database that lists U. S. drugs
and let?s me find the commonly used brand names of these U. S.
prescription drugs in Mexico, Caribbean countries, and other "poor"
countries.
Can you help? |

gfs-ga,
This one *might* do the trick, though it also may be more
comprehensive than you had in mind, since it doesn't focus only on
poorer countries:
http://bioinf.charite.de/superdrug/
In the "Name of Substance" field, enter the name of any drug of
interest, hit SEARCH, and on the results page, click on the link the
CAS column.
For phenobarbitol, you'll get back a list like this:

Hello gfs-ga,
I believe the ChemID Plus database from the National Library of
Medicine (Specialized Information Services) has the information you're
looking for.
http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/
Data is available for 380,071 records.
ChemIDplus provides access to structure and nomenclature information
for the identification of chemical substances cited in NLM databases.
The database contains over 379,000 chemical records, of which over
257,000 include chemical structures. ChemIDplus Lite is available for
Name and RN searching without the need for plugins or applets.

Here are the search results for the two examples you gave for ZOLOFT

gfs-ga,
This has been surprisingly hard to track down, and I'm not sure a
ready database exists with the precise information you need.
You might want to ask in a library for a copy of this book:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0853692106/103-9579514-2203051?v=glance&n=283155
The extra pharmacopoeia
"Drug reference providing pharmacists and physicians with information
on drugs and medicines used worldwide. All monographs have been
revised, with over 300 deleted and more than 250 added. Includes a new
chapter on bronchodilators. Part one: 4,336 monographs. Part two: 825
monographs..."
Sounds like that may do the trick.
Let me know what you come up with,

gfs-ga,
The publication I mentioned earlier has been kept up-to-date, but now
goes by the (simpler) title, Martindale, in honor of its original
author.
Ordering information is here:
http://www.pharmpress.com/shop/Collection_Display.asp?mscssid=KWRMLSA56S1F9NF5NBD4LVQ24JE78K9C&SiteLanguage=ENG&CurrencyID=1&PageType=books&CollectionId=%400000000039&CollName=Martindale+&TopLevel=
The book can be purchased in print or in electronic format, and costs
several hundred dollars. Again, you might want to check with a
librarian for any copies available in your area.
Also, there is mention at the site of a free trial to the online
service, which may certainly be worth checking out:
http://www.medicinescomplete.com/mc/trials.htm
Let me know if that information meets your needs.
