I'm trying to find out the meaning of the Rod Stewart song "Rhythm of
my Heart". The speculation is that it's about a soldier in war, but
I'm trying to find out for sure. Can anyone cite any references from
Rod Stewart himself indicating what the song is about and giving any
details?

Well, believe it or not, the song ?Rhythm of My Heart? was written by
Marc Jordan (with John Capek) way back in 1982. It would be years
however before the song would be recorded by Rod Stewart and also
recorded by Marc Jordan on his own album, ?Reckless Valentine?.

Indeed the song is about the experiences of a forlorn soldier at war,
but the authenticity of the song as an autobiographically based lyric
is questionable. In fact, absent any other references it appears that
the song is merely a creative account of a momentary hardship in the
life of a fictional soldier.

?At the same time Rod Stewart was putting the finishing touches on his
'Vagabond Heart' album when WEA UK pushed Stewart to add a 'single' to
the record. The chairman of the label, Rob Dickens, remembered a 1984
demo by Marc Jordan and John Capek called "Rhythm Of My Heart" and
Stewart loved the rough, bagpipe-laced demo.

Trevor Horn was brought in to produce the song and it was added at the
last minute to the album. It became a million selling single that
propelled the album to triple platinum but it almost didn't happen
because its subtle war references were deemed too offensive for BBC
Radio during the Persian Gulf War. Fortunately, the war ended and the
original tune was issued without the need for Jordan to rewrite it.?

While I was unable to find a word-for-word summary of the meaning and
intent of the lyrics, I believe the aforementioned reference clearly
establishes the lyrics as war related. Please let me know if this
suffices as an answer.

According to a fan blog describing a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne,
Australia (Feb. 22/05), Stewart himself sang the song in the context
of a comment about soldiers/war: " 'Rhythm Of My Heart' was dedicated
to the returned soldiers and featured the backdrop of the Australian
flag on the screen."

Indeed, the song "Rhythm of My Heart" was written in the early 80's
and already sung in 1986 by Dutch singer René Shuman, way before Rod
Stewart even heard about the song.
