Is it legal for gift certificates to expire in NJ? I purchased one for "Metro". This is a hair salon. It does say it expires in 1 year, however, someone told me that this was illegal in NJ. Thank you.............debbie |

Here's a link to the Web site of the Attorney General of the State of New Jersey (this is a press release): http://www.njstatelib.org/NJLH/lh2002/govmess/ch14gov.htm It states here that "unless a gift certificate...states the expiration date or other limitations directly on it, a consumer will be able to redeem its value at any time." This page also provides a link to contact the Attorney General, which you could do to ask specifically about the "Metro" gift certificate. In some states, unlcaimed gift certificates must be turned over to the state's office of "unclaimed property." |

I have no idea why my comment was removed. At any rate, whoever told you it was illegal was likely thinking of California. |
