Dear hatchy-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. The
answer is Sperry Topsiders, which made their debut in 1935, as opposed
to Sebago Docksides, which were first introduced in the 1970?s:

?Since 1935, when Paul Sperry invented the slip-resistant sole, Sperry
Topsiders have become more than a shoe - Sperry Topsiders are a way of
life.?
WALKING ON A CLOUD

?Over 60 years ago on an icy, blustery day, Paul Sperry took his dog
for a walk and noticed something interesting. The dog had an uncanny
ability to keep its balance on slick, wet surfaces. He examined the
animal's paw and found wave-like patterns. This discovery became the
blueprint for the first Sperry Top-Sider® outsoles and changed the
course of footwear history forever.?

?ABOUT SPERRY TOP-SIDERS?

?Paul Sperry-yachtsman, prep and inventor of the Top-Sider-probably
had no idea in 1935 that the funny-looking shoe he'd created would
become a cultural icon. He just wanted better traction on the deck of
his schooner, the Sirocco. According to company legend (and in classic
prep tradition), Sperry noticed how the grooved paws of his cocker
spaniel gave the animal great footing on ice-so he reproduced those
wavy, multidirectional slits using a razor blade to cut a herringbone
pattern on the bottom of a standard rubber sole. He patented the
design and struck up a deal with the Converse Rubber Company to supply
him with raw materials. The rest, as they say, is history.?

Sebago did make a type of boat shoe as early as 1948, but the model
known as "Docksides" came much later:

?The popular Docksides boat shoe, first introduced by Sebago over 30
years ago, were inspired by rugged coast of Maine and its hundreds of
lakes.?

?In 1948, Sebago developed the world?s first leather boat shoe?.Known
for quality hand-sewn leather and classic styling, the company?s
biggest shoe was the Docksides boat shoe, which Sebago launched
globally in 1970.?

I vote for Topsiders. Never heard of the others. Wonder if there is a
design patent?
