Find an article that appeared in Motor Trend or one of the car
magazines in about 2001 - It was titled, planes, trains, cars and
buses

It was a feature article that noted how long it took to get from
Washington D. C. to
New York using each mode of transportation as an example. Article
proved buses (Greyhound) was still the most effecient way to travel --
thought not the quickest.

An excerpt from the above article:

"What about bus travel?

Greyhound actually seems more reasonable. A round trip ticket is only
$110 and the travel time each way is just over 10 hours, about an hour
more than I'd take driving directly."

Big Apple Bound: Is Getting There Half the Fun?

Once upon a time, like last year, if you had to get from Washington to
New York, you went by plane if you had big money, by train if you had
plenty of time, by car if you had a deep personal need for masochistic
experiences, and by bus if you had nothing at all.

Now, everything has changed. Amtrak's new Acela Express train travels
nonstop between Union and Penn stations in 2 hours 28 minutes, almost
half an hour off the former rail champion, the Metroliner. And the
E-ZPass -- the plastic transponder you attach to your windshield so
you can speed through toll booths while guffawing at suckers waiting
in endless lines -- slices a good 20 minutes off the drive, and much
more on trying holiday weekends. Imagine: Better living through
technology!"

I've generally found that Amtrak is the fastest by far. One bypasses
traffic altogether and, depending upon the details of where you're
headed it can be effectively door-to-door service (plus a short taxi
ride on either end).

I've driven back and forth between DC and NYC and found it to be a
mess, universally, without exception. This same problem would plague
the Greyhound solution as well.

Taking a plane down has the problem that you waste a lot of time
checking in, doing screening, etc. on either end. And then there is
the pain of getting to any airport in either NYC or DC. Forget it.

Hope this was helpful.

Sorry, I forgot to add that the amtrak train is usually about a 3 hour
experience, depending upon whether or not you get the acela train.

http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak/FareFinder?_tripType=OneWay&_origin=new+york&_depmonthyear=2006-05&_depday=10&_dephourmin=&_destination=washington+dc&_retmonthyear=&_retday=&_rethourmin=&_adults=1&_children=0&_infants=0&_searchBy=schedule&x=0&y=0

this is just one example for you.

please note that a sub-3 hour trip from NYC to DC is much faster than
either driving, bussing, or taking a plane, which is the essence of
what i said above.

cheers

I would opt for Amtrak every time.

A great experience.

I live in DC and travel to New York frequently. Amtrak is by far the
fastest way to get to NYC, but it is also the most expensive, and a
round trip can easily be around $200. Greyhound is very slow, and
service is awful, and the stations are filthy and unsafe, Greyhound is
also overpriced. Chinatown busses (just do a google search), are
faster than Greyhound and are very very cheap. (less than $50 round
trip usually).
