Question ID: 727450
I got a letter from a debt collector asking I pay for something that
was sent from the Internet for free. Now they don't have my credit
card or SSN only my name and address, they said that they will post
negatively on my credit report if I don't pay but I don't know how
that would even be possible without the SSN? Can a debt collector in
the U.S. post on your credit report with only your name and address?
Please provide a link as many have told me yes while I really don't
believe it.

I've had video stores late fees I was suppose to pay, and they
notified the credit authorities whoever they are. Anyway years later I
get a SSN and when they ran a check on my for something else nothing
came up. I don?t think they can do anything.

In the UK they just use the address - the name is an added bonus

- created some problems for someone I know ...

I think Experian (UK owned) operates in the US

Keep everything you get from them, also photocopy everything you send
to them (it is better than a duplicate) feel free to point out to them
that there is something called 'libel'.

It might also be fun to introduce the term 'consequential liability'
- in the context that their clients might go for them as they are
making their clients look like morons.

You could have quite a lot of fun with them, if nothing else by making
them write increasingly stupid letters.
