Insofar as it is possible for businesses to opperate with an acceptable impact upon the environment, globalization need not have a detrimental impact on the environment. With that in mind, companies exist to make money, and are certainly not above exploiting differences in environmental policy in the countries in which they operate. Thus, while theoretically possible, it is currently rare for globalization to be beneficial to the environment. There is an entire website dedicated to globalization and the environment being developed at ( http://www.unep.org/unep/program/global/home.htm ). However, only parts of it are currently completed, though the site provides some links to background material until it's done. About.com has a brief introduction to a short list of good links on the subject of globalization and the environment: http://globalization.about.com/library/weekly/aa051402a.htm The Globalist ( http://www.theglobalist.com/DBWeb/Community.aspx?FeatureId=7 ), and the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee ( http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/CIE/Resources/globalization/globalenv.html ) also have some good resources for more in-depth research. Hi Sinnie, I think the main issue is: is globalization is happening at the same pace in every relevant sector. At the moment it is only happening in economics. The necessary adjustments in politics are not being done because the bodies that could create and oversee the relevant policies are not in place yet. This is the main reason globalization can be such a bad thing at the moment. It's probably best to compare it to the time of industrialization in Europe. A similar thing is the current globalization: nearly unchecked economic exploitation of a new concept. Politics and other factors have to slowly catch up to keep everything in check now and make globalization a success. voyager-ga |
